Hunting Season Lodging in Southeast Oklahoma: McAlester Hunter’s Guide 2026–27
Southeast Oklahoma is serious hunting country — whitetail on the wildlife management areas around Lake Eufaula, ducks on the lake, and some of the most sought-after archery permits in the state at the McAlester Army Ammunition Plant. Here’s what hunters need to know for the 2026–27 season, and how to set up a comfortable home base in McAlester.

MCAAP Controlled Deer Hunts
The McAlester Army Ammunition Plant covers about 44,800 acres and is closed to hunting except for controlled deer and turkey hunts. Its deer hunts are traditional archery only (recurve or longbow, no sights), and they’re famous for big bucks — the plant reported a record harvest in 2023. Permits are drawn through ODWC’s controlled hunts program; the application window opens each spring on Go Outdoors Oklahoma. If you’re drawn, we’re about a 15-minute drive from the plant via Hwy 270.

Licenses, Hunter Ed & E-Check
- Licenses: buy online at Go Outdoors Oklahoma or in the app. Nonresidents need a nonresident hunting license plus a deer license for each method (archery, muzzleloader, gun) — see current ODWC license fees. The Walmart Supercenter right next door to the hotel has a sporting goods counter; call ahead if you plan to buy your license there.
- Hunter education: required for hunters 30 and younger, with apprentice options for those without certification.
- E-Check: all deer and turkey must be checked within 24 hours of leaving the hunt area and before processing. Put your field tag on the animal right away and keep the confirmation number with the carcass.
